Nestled in the stunning Luberon region of Provence, springs the town of L’Isle Sur La Sorgue on market days. Prepare for an explosion of antiques, fruit, vegetables, clothing, soap and glorious, ubiquitous lavande!
L’Isle Sur La Sorgue or “Island on the Sorgue River” is known as the “Venice of Provence” with its abundant waterways. The popular Sunday and Wednesday markets run along the Sorgue River in the middle of the bustling town.
The aroma of lavender and soap waft at nearly every turn: citron, lavande, cannelle, jasmine, vanille…how to choose? Each vendor is more proud than the next of their natural products that are locally produced. I’ll take five!
Trays of kinds of olives you’ve never seen before. Brightly colored fruit stacked and ready for the plucking. And then you remember to look up and see the shutters! All those shutters in shades that permeate the region; It’s too much.
Not hungry? How about a bag to carry home your booty? Eye-catching scarves and hats make you a fashion plate.
Oh fromage! You had me at bon jour. A sample? Si vous plait!
The artful arrangement in the markets is not only for selling purposes but is intrinsic to the region. The colors, the scents, the care. It’s like a dream come to life.
