How about a day trip to the Italian Riviera? Why yes, thank you very much, I would love to!
San Remo (Sanremo to the locals) is just over the border from Monaco and France making it a simple day trip from both countries. We only spent an afternoon here but it was enough to sample gelato, stroll the old squares and take in the Mediterranean breeze. We were smitten! (And able to say we had dinner in three different countries on three consecutive nights!)
Gorgeous stretches of seaside promenades, posh, pastel-colored hotels and towering canopies of palm and cypress trees line this delightful Italian resort town. And not to be forgotten, their impressive casino, Il Casinò Municipale, built in 1905.
On the ride into the city, you will see glass hothouses scattered on the hills. Sanremo is known as Riviera dei Fiori or the ‘City of Flowers’. Mercato dei Fiori, Italy’s largest wholesale flower market is here and each year more than 20,000 tons of cut flowers like carnations, roses and mimosa are sold. It smells heavenly here…
They also boast to have more scooters than anywhere else in Italy. Like that’s possible. Anyone who has been to Italy knows that scooters are everywhere!
Like most Italian towns, traffic abounds and food is key. We had a delicious meal in one of the squares while children held races with their dog in the lead! Dozens of scooters and tiny fiats (I just love them!) fit into every nook and cranny. We finished our day with the creamiest of the creamy, gelato. (We like to say it like Otto from The Simpsons. “My name is Otto…”) Little known fact: all ice cream, gelato and glacé are calorie free while on holiday! What a fantastic memory from the gorgeous town of Sanremo!
