It’s always the places that you don’t intend on loving that steal a piece of your heart. A medieval, fairy-tale castle in the clouds, this charming and diverse place in the Languedoc region will transport you to the magical and exciting city of Carcassonne, France!
The sight of the castle over the Aude River will stop you flat; It’s gorgeous. It’s right out of a children’s story book. Begin by walking over the Pont-Vieux, a pedestrian-only bridge built during the 14th century. Meander through the winding streets of the restored La Cité leading up to the castle taking in the stunning colors and incredible work of the restoration. A tour of the Château Comtal, built during the 12th century is a must! If you’re lucky enough, they will also put on a medieval festival with authentic costumes, musicians and even jousting!
Cross back across the river to visit the other city, La Bastide Saint Louis. Carcassonne is about an hour from the border of Spain and its influence is abundant in the flavor, architecture and the language. You will hear both French and Spanish spoken here.
On an extraordinarily lucky day, one might stumble across a wine festival with a (click to listen!) fantastically fun band! The Languedoc region brought out its finest wines for a weekend of music, food and revelry. And what fun was had! Some new and lovely, generous friends were made along with €2 glasses at every booth…perhaps too much fun was had! (wink, wink!)
Only 24 hours in this stunning city is not enough! Plus an impending storm chased us… Next time a boat tour of the Canal du Midi and even a proper wine tasting class at the wine education center, Vinecole. What friendly and warm people! And such incredible wine from a lesser-lauded region. Such flavor and excitement in such a stunning place. Sending a wish across the ocean that I will return very soon!
