This week’s wine comes from a small winery called Porter Creek in Healdsburg in Sonoma County. Quite simply, this is a sweet 40-acre winery and vineyard tucked into the Russian River Valley turning out some of the best wine in the region.
This Zinfandel is the kind you’ve heard about with its Big, Bright Bouquet! Essence of terroir and smoke greet you but cherries and blackberries burst out of the bottle. This is quite spicy and peppery but balances pleasantly with the fruit. It was blended with just 10% Carignane. This is a juicy wine, almost effervescent. It is rich and textured and not for Chardonnay drinkers! This is an excellent wine but white wine drinkers or fans of light reds like Beaujolais might be overwhelmed. In a wine tasting, this would be the last before dessert wines. You need to work up to this one!
This is a bold Zinfandel that matures well and would go favorably with robust dishes like barbecue or tomato-based pastas like puttanesca and even pizza! This would also pair deliciously with spicy and smoked cheeses like gorgonzola, gruyere or gouda. Aged cheeses like parmesan and asiago would compliment this bold red delightfully.
The tasting room is tiny but the wine is significant. The day we visited a salty Scotsman told fantastic fables as he poured some of the finest nectar to come out of the Russian River Valley. This is a must stop next time you visit Sonoma County!
